Sweets

I just finished watching Iron Man 2...again. And loved it again. I remember reading a review of it when it was first released in the theater and a critic made a snarky comment about "eye candy". Then I started thinking about all the other movies I enjoy that are replete with "eye candy" and I started wondering why "eye candy" is a bad thing. I mean, everybody likes candy, right?

  1. I like eye candy. Isn't that the whole point of watching a movie? I mean, who really looks like most of the people we see on screen? Eye candy is just part of the fun of movie escapism.

  2. I like candy. Especially the curvy kind on the big and small screens. I think some critics just feel like they have to put some negative comment in to make it look like they know what they're talk bout.

  3. You know what's funny? No, well, I'll tell ya!...I saw a movie where ALL the characters were unattractive and found that I could not get into the movie...It showed me a little about myself that I DIDN'T even know! I always comment negatively when all the characters of a show or movie are gorgeous...and now I realize that I was not being completely honest with myself! That's scary stuff for modest me!
However, One thing I do know for sure is I prefer watching movies with gorgeous scenery in the background...When I saw Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon...It was like a visual orgasm...Now that's my kinda eye candy! LOL

  4. @Anita: Makes ya feel like kind've a hypocrite, huh? LOL! It bugs the crap out of you when people on the screen are improbably attractive, but it's a lot more fun (sometimes) to see gorgeous faces and bodies prancing around. "Scary stuff for modest (you)" - Love it! Hey, scary but honest. Speaking of honesty, I'm actually 'over' the whole gorgeous people doing gorgeous things they can't afford (think "Friends" - a bunch of pretty, young white folk living beyond their means), but I really like beautiful scenery. Mountains, oceans, even cityscapes. My favorite eye candy, though, is whiz-bang, kick-ass visual effects. Ahhh...

  5. Yep...big time hypocrite! But I really don't have a very high standard for what I find attractive. In fact, I can usually find something very attractive about most people.
I think I realized that primal attraction always comes first...You can't be completely compatible with someone else unless you are attracted to them in some way, and those first impressions ultimately tell you if you are even going to talk to a person or avoid them! So, while I'd like to say that looks don't matter...they do initially...Sad, but now I know the deep down honest truth about me and I like eye candy! LOL (For me, doesn't have to be sickening sweet to be candy either!)

  6. With you Steven. I'm over all the beautiful people living lives they never could in real life. Give me more down to earth. Give me more real. All shows like that do is set up unrealistic expectations for young people. No, you don't get to move to New York and live in a cool place with cool furniture and have cool friends. You get to sweat it out, struggle, barely scrape by, and live in a hovel. Reality.

  7. @Anita: Yup, physical attraction, unfortunately, matters. It usually doesn't last very long, but it matters. Just ask a female peacock. LOL!

@Kyle: I guess that's what indie movies and PBS are for. Grittier, down-to-earth slices of life. Cops that don't live in penthouse apartments or chic renovated lofts with big industrial sliding front doors and freight elevators. Roommates that bicker and actually stay mad at each other for more than 23 minutes. Reality, indeed.

  8. @Steven64 eye candy is what makes movies fun and enjoyable. Well, I say that, but there are some that rely too much on it, both with regards to people, special effects and CGI. I'm not saying I don't enjoying a good gritty movie or non-attractive people, but think of the fun movies you enjoy and you'll realize they are full of eye candy of the people and effects kind. At least my favorites are.

    Fun post!

  9. @LeeLee: It's interesting. When I first posted this little tidbit, I was equating 'eye candy' solely with special effects, CGI whiz-bang stuff. But a lot of people think of eye candy as pretty faces and bodies, which it is. It's just weird that that didn't occur to me before. Duh. But you're dead on: pretty folk are fun to look at, especially if they're being chased by a big honkin' monster! LOL!
